Father Winters was a native of Raleigh, North Carolina, having made North Augusta his home for over 30 years. He was a graduate of Woodrow Wilson High School, Washington, D.C., The University of North Carolina and Virginia Theological Seminary, Class of 1949. Father Winters was ordained by The Rt. Reverend M. George Henry at The Church of the Transfiguration, Bat Cave, NC. He served as a Priest in The Episcopal Diocese of Upper South Carolina, serving across North and South Carolina with his last assignment being St. John’s Episcopal Church, Clearwater, SC. Father Winters was an active parishioner at St. Bartholomew’s Episcopal Church where he participated in Wednesday Bible Class, Sunday School, Stephen’s Ministers and was an avid supporter of Missions in India. He was an avid tennis player and member of the Graniteville Leisure Club. Father Winters was preceded in death by his grandson, Cory Robinson, parents, Rhett Y. Winters, Sr. and Elizabeth Knox Winters, and a sister, Elsa March.
Survivors include his loving wife of 62 years, Mary T. Winters; three daughters and sons-in-law, Emilie and Kenneth Mead, Sun City, AZ, Kathy and Gordie Leopard, Warrenville, SC, and Susan and Hazel Robinson, Chester, SC; two sons and a daughter-in-law, Henry Winters, Gilbert, AZ and Peter and Sharon Winters, Glen Allen, VA; a sister, Dora Taylor, New Bern, NC; 6 grandchildren, Chad Mead, Patrick Mead, Erin Mead, Kevin Robinson, Gordon Leopard III, and Joel Leopard; 9 great-grandchildren.
The family will receive friends in the Church Parish Hall following the service.
