DURHAM, N.C. – Rev. Dr. Ednace Albert Roberts, age 73, died unexpectedly late Sunday night at his home.

Al was born October 10, 1939 in Bath in Aiken Co., SC. He graduated from Aiken High School in 1957, then served in the U.S. Air Force for four years. He received his Master’s degree from Southeastern Seminary in Wake Forest, NC and his Doctorate from Trinity Seminary in Evanston, IN.

Al served in the ministry for 25 years, and was the pastor of three churches, Bethany Missionary Baptist Church in Kenly, NC, the Turner Memorial Baptist Church in Garner, NC, and the Hocutt Memorial Baptist Church in Burlington, NC.

He retired from the Ministry about fourteen years ago, and had lived in Durham for the past nine years. He served as President of the Parkside Neighborhood Association and was Chairman of the Board of Trustees in the Durham County Library Association.

He was a member of Duke Memorial United Methodist Church, and was a Stephen Minister and was associated with HEREOS HEROES C.A.R.E.

He had authored, and published his book, “A Disparity in Doctrine and Theology” and was preparing a second book.

Al was a devoted family man. He is survived by his wife of 52 years, Marcia Norman Roberts; his daughter, Janet Roberts Sherrill and husband Russell of Raleigh, his mother, Grace Ellenberg Roberts of Aiken, SC; his sister, Gayle Roberts Pierce of North Augusta, SC; his brother, Jeffrey Julian Roberts and wife Jackie of Aiken, SC, and several nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his son, Ednace Albert Roberts, Jr. and his father, Marcy Ednace Roberts.

Graveside funeral services will be held Thursday at 11:00 AM at Oakwood Cemetery in Raleigh, Rev. Ginger Thomas officiating,

Following the graveside service, a memorial service will be held Thursday at 2:00 PM in Duke Memorial United Methodist Church with Rev. Thomas officiating. The family will receive friends in the church parlor following the service.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the Paralyzed Veterans of America, 801 Eighteenth St. Washington, DC 20006-3517, or to a favorite charity.
