Bessie Palmore Byrd
Survivors include a son, Henry C. Byrd II, Aiken, SC; a daughter, Janet (Charles) Harrison, Aiken, SC; a grandson, Charles Fitzgerald Harrison, Sao Paula, Brazil; two two (2) granddaughters, Chanda J. (Richard) Barr, Lexington, SC and Talore Danielle Harrison, San Antonio, TX; one (1) great-granddaughter, Havalyn Bilea Dorn, Lexington, SC; an adopted daughter, Della R. Allen, North Augusta, SC; two (2) sisters, Mary L. Washington, Newark, NJ and Joan P. Farver, Augusta, GA; one (1) sister-in-law, Queen Esther Rouse, New Ellenton, SC; one (1) brother-in-law, Lawrence (Ruby) Byrd, Washington, DC; a devoted nephew, Rep. Quincy (Dianne) Murphy, Augusta, GA; a devoted friend, Tempie L. Adams; and loving nieces, nephews, cousins and friends.
Mrs. Byrd was a teacher in the Aiken county School System for more than 30 years. She was a devoted member of the Second Baptist Church in Aiken, SC and was active in many of the church auxiliaries and also served as Mother of the Church for a time. She was a member of Church Women United, the Effion Chapter #391 Order of the Eastern Star, and of the American Legion Women’s Auxiliary #212.
Mrs. Byrd was an excellent cook and hostess who enjoyed spending time with her family and friends, traveling, and reading.
Funeral services will be on Thursday, February 28 at 1:00 PM at the Second Baptist Church on Hampton Avenue, Aiken, with the Rev. Douglas Slaughter delivering the eulogy. Interment will follow at Aiken Memorial Park, Hwy. 19 North. Pallbearers will be the deacons of Second Baptist Church, with the ladies of the Effion Chapter #391 Order of the Eastern Star serving as flower bearers.
There will be a wake on Wednesday from 7:00 until 9:00 PM at the G. L. Brightharp & Sons Mortuary, Beaufort St., Aiken, SC.
