Audubon Society to meet
The Augusta-Aiken Audubon Society will meet on Thursday, Nov. 8, at 7 p.m. The meeting location is the North Augusta Community Center, 495 Brookside Ave., North Augusta. The public is invited to all meetings, programs and field trips sponsored by Augusta-Aiken Audubon.
The program will be "Silver Bluff Audubon Center & Sanctuary: A look back through the years." The Augusta-Aiken Audubon Society and Silver Bluff Audubon have enjoyed a close association for decades. Center Director Paul Koehler will present look back in time at many of the scenes and activities that have taken place since Silver Bluff was "born" in 1975.
The Silver Bluff sanctuary is doing its part to boost numbers of big-eared bats, Corynorhinus rafinesquii, an endangered species in South Carolina. The South Carolina Department of Natural Resources teamed with Silver Bluff in March 2011 to erect an artificial bat roost in hopes that it could become a more permanent home for the bats. In the last few weeks 42 of the endangered bats were counted using the artificial roost along with three bats that continued to use the old tenant home.
Field trip schedule:
Augusta-Aiken Audubon's field trips are open at no charge to all chapter members and the public. Morning trips during the winter usually begin at 9 a.m. and end around noon; warmer weather trips generally begin at 8 a.m. and end around 11 a.m.
Nov. 10 - Merry Ponds. The group will search along the paved road for small birds and then look in the ponds for arriving ducks and other water birds. Anne Waters and Lois Stacey are trip leaders.
Nov. 17 - Silver Bluff Audubon Sanctuary. The group will bird around the ponds and other areas in the sanctuary. Trip will end about noon. Anne Waters and Lois Stacey are trip leaders.
Nov. 24 - Di-Lane Plantation WMA. This is an area of fields and woods south of Waynesboro, Ga. Anne Waters and Lois Stacey are trip leaders.
Dec. 1 - Merry Ponds. The group will concentrate on searching the ponds for ducks, which should be arriving, as well as other water birds. Trip will end about noon. Anne Waters and Lois Stacey are leaders.
Dec. 8 - Owl Prowl. This is an evening trip. Doug and Alice Walker will meet with everyone at 7 p.m. at the education building at Silver Bluff Audubon Sanctuary and will lead the search for owls.
Dec. 15 - Augusta Christmas Bird Count. Teams will cover the 15 mile diameter count circle which is in Georgia and South Carolina. Contact Anne Waters to volunteer.
Dec. 24 - Aiken Christmas Bird Count. Calvin Zippler is in charge of this count. Reach Zippler at zipplerc@bellsouth.net or call 642-2264.
Jan. 5 - Phinizy Swamp Nature Park. This is an all walking field trip. Ducks and other birds will be the focus. Anne Waters and Lois Stacey will lead.
