North Augusta hits road to take on South Aiken
The Region 5-AAAA title is looming larger on the horizon this week for North Augusta High School's football team, in the wake of Friday's 33-0 demolition of White Knoll.
The Yellow Jackets celebrated their homecoming by dumping a team that has been described as one of the region's stronger members. In improving their record to 6-2 overall and 2-0 in the region, the Jackets played most of the game on the Timberwolves' end of the field.
North Augusta's next assignment is Friday on the road against South Aiken (1-7, 1-1) at 7:30 p.m. The Thoroughbreds' most recent game put an end to their 15-game losing streak, as they sneaked past Lexington, 20-14.
Against White Knoll (6-2, 1-1), the second quarter was prime time for the Jackets. They needed three plays before sophomore quarterback Trib Reece connected with Devin Grimes on a 12-yard touchdown pass.
"We came to play, got up big on them in the first half, and we didn't let up off the gas," said Grimes, a senior who serves the Jackets as a wide receiver and defensive back. He wound up with seven receptions for a total of 101 yards.
The squad is relatively healthy with the major exception being senior quarterback Cody Turner, who is still dealing with leg trouble. Reece, filling in for Turner, is "stepping up big," Grimes noted.
"The offensive line is doing what they need to do, and the defense is making big stops when we need them, and everything's on a roll. Everybody's on the same page," Grimes said.
"White Knoll's a quality team, so this is a big win," said North Augusta head coach Dan Pippin. "The best thing we did was defense. They didn't cross the 50 but one time until the very end."
The Timberwolves were limited to 96 yards in the game, all by ground. By comparison, DeVonte Pressley ran for 211 yards and racked up two Jacket touchdowns.
Leading the way for North Augusta's defense was Kris Howard. The area's leading tackler tallied 11 more stops in the game, while Morgan and Jesse Owusu each had six tackles. Brandon Maddox also had six tackles but forced one fumble and recovered the other.
