Business Profile: Matt Nieman Insurance Agency aims to help people
Insurance can be an intimidating word to some, and a confusing one to others. At the Matt Nieman Insurance Agency, they’re striving toward one simple goal helping people.
Nieman is a graduate of Ohio State University and started in the insurance business in 1990 when his son was born. The reason for the choice was to start up a college plan he didn’t want his son to miss out on many of the college experiences that he had to due to working two jobs and on his family’s farm.
“I started looking around at college plans when he was born and finally one of the agents said I should get into this business,” Nieman said. “... I joined up with Nationwide Insurance in Moncks Corner and Hilton Head as an associate agent doing life and financial services. Finally, I went to Nationwide after a few years of being second-in-command and asked if they had anything I could buy from any agents that wanted to retire. We were living in Charleston and they came to me with an agent in North Augusta, my wife and I came here and fell in love with it.”
Nieman then bought Bob Feaster Nationwide Insurance, in 1997. Since then, the business has expanded its operations to include Aiken.
Nieman also bought out an agent in Midland Valley and has expanded the book of business from 1,400 policies to a little more than 5,000.
“The Lord has blessed us very much,” Nieman said. “I work a lot on the financial services, rolling over 401Ks, setting up IRAs and mutual funds for people and working on the investment end of the business. My sister, Kim, pretty much handles the property and casualty end of the business, and she works out of the Aiken office. Hopefully, my son will take it over one day, but that’s to be seen yet.”
The North Augusta office’s staff includes Nieman and his wife, Marcie, as well as licensed agents Jennifer Gray, Jennifer Thaxton and Brenda Raymond; along with customer service representative Faleaser Elmore. The Aiken office is home to Kim Gosney, Debbie Smrz, Stephanie Gregory and Joseph Williams.
Nieman and the agency have won multiple awards throughout the years. For Nieman, however, the best feeling in the world is knowing that his clients are cared for and taken care of.
“It’s really nice to get paid for helping people, and it’s a good feeling that you can make a living helping people out and being there when they need us,” he said.
