Talent hunt sees 16 contestants

Sigma Pi Chapter (comprising Aiken, Barnwell and Edgefield counties) of Omega Psi Phi Fraternity, Inc. recently held the 2013 Talent Hunt Competition.

Sixteen contestants registered for the competition. Contestants represented home school, South Aiken Baptist Christian School, North Augusta High School, South Aiken High School, Wagener-Salley High School, Strom Thurmond High School and Aiken High School.

There were vocalists and a variety of instrumental contestants, playing violins, pianos, brass, drums and wind instruments.

First place winner was R. Delany Crews II, violinist of North Augusta High School, who played Concerto No. 6 in A Minor, OP, 3, 1st MVT. He is a member of the Beta Club, Future Business Leaders of America and the school’s chorus. He is an honor student and a member of the Regional Orchestra and Allstate Orchestra. He is the son of Reginald D. Crews and Ordean L. Crews.

Second place winner was Anne Ateca, a vocalist, home school student for her rendition of “Still the Lark Finds Repose” by Thomas Linley. She is a member of Aiken Community Playhouse Youth Wing and Grace Church of Aiken Choir. She is the daughter of Audrey Ateca.

Third place winner was Alicia Beach also a home school student who played “Cantico Iberico” by Eugenie Roche Rolle. She is a piano accompanist and a member of the Region and All-County bands. She enjoys running and Zumba. She is the daughter of John and Ann Beach.

Winners received cash awards totaling $1,000. The first place winner will go to the Regional Talent Hunt in North Carolina and all expenses will be paid by the fraternity.
