Agapé Senior will host an event on April 30 to help families and caretakers for those who have any form of dementia.

The program, which is titled "Navigating Dementia: Let Us Be Your Guide to Understanding Dementia," will be held at noon at the North Augusta Community Center. Lunch will be provided, and it is sponsored by Agapé Senior, South Carolina's Alzheimer's, and dementia care experts.

"Dementia and Alzheimer's, which is the most common form of dementia, has become an epidemic in our country. The numbers are staggering," said Sherri Siler, a seniors solutions adviser at Agapé.

"One in three families are affected by this devastating disease. We want to share information and give the direction you need to deal with your loved one and know the disease. We will help you recognize the symptoms, learn how to communicate with the individual, and (give) options that are available to families."

Not only will the event feature experts who can help families and caretakers recognize signs, but it will also provide a form of support. It is through support and education that Agapé hopes to help families navigate dementia.

"No one should have to travel this journey alone," Siler said.
