Butler graduates Marine training

Marine Corps Pfc. Antavius D. Butler, a 2012 graduate of Strom Thurmond High School, earned the title of United States Marine after graduating from recruit training at Marine Corps Recruit Depot, Parris Island. For 13 weeks, Butler stayed committed during some of the world's most demanding entry-level military training in order to be transformed from civilian to Marine instilled with pride, discipline and the core values of honor, courage and commitment. Training subjects included close-order drill, marksmanship with an M-16A4 rifle, physical fitness, martial arts, swimming, military history, customs and courtesies. One week prior to graduation, Butler endured The Crucible, a 54-hour final test of recruits' minds and bodies. Upon completion, recruits are presented the Marine Corps emblem and called Marines for the first time.

Students awarded scholarships

Six North Augusta students and one Belvedere student have been awarded scholarships from Anderson University. Kelsey Cox of North Augusta has been awarded the Provost's Scholarship in the amount of $6,500 per year; Bryan Gordon of North Augusta has been awarded the Provost's Scholarship in the amount of $6,500 per year; Nicholas Gove of North Augusta has been awarded the Founder's Scholarship in the amount of $8,500 per year; Allison Hagen of North Augusta has been awarded the Founder's Scholarship in the amount of $8,500 per year; Skyler Hyde of North Augusta has been awarded the Founder's Scholarship in the amount of $8,500 per year; and Shelby Kenrick of North Augusta has been awarded the Provost's Scholarship in the amount of $6,500 per year. Amber Pack of Belvedere has been awarded the Founder's Scholarship in the amount of $8,500 per year.

Local students named to dean's list

Charleston Southern University congratulates the following local students who have been named to the dean's list for fall 2012: Ariel Spires of Bath, Joanna Mize of Jackson, Megan Fife of North Augusta, Christopher Liner of North Augusta and Christopher Snider of North Augusta. In order to be named to the dean's list at Charleston Southern, students must have taken at least 12 credit hours (earned) and have a 3.5 grade point average or above for that semester.
