LETTER: Tax allocations: swing and a miss
I am a tax payer in Aiken County. I understand that the city government of North Augusta is asking the Aiken County School Board to vote in favor of a TIF (tax increment financing.) This TIF would allow the City of North Augusta to finance - of all things frivolous - a baseball stadium.
I have lived in North Augusta for 23 years. In these 23 years, our public school buildings have been getting in disrepair and overcrowded. The school board just voted a tax increase last summer. This increase was in order to pay wage increases to faculty and staff members. Now, the City of North Augusta is asking for permission to use these school taxes, in what I view as a form of collateral, to pay for a baseball stadium.
I could go on and on about my feelings toward this TIF. I just hope the Aiken County School Board members know that our school taxes are to be spent to repair and expand our schools, not frivolity.
