For the first time in its history, Fox Creek High School will have an academic calendar different from the rest of Edgefield County, starting in the 2013-14 school year.

The reason for the move is rather simple, according to principal Dr. Tim Murph.

"Now that we're a part of the South Carolina Public Charter School district," he said, "we've decided to create our own academic calendar because, historically, only 20 percent of our students were Aiken County residents. This year that percentage jumped up to 30 percent, and we anticipate it to be over 40 percent next year. As a result we tried to come up with a calendar that would have a middle ground between Aiken and Edgefield County."

Murph also points to many students having younger siblings as another driving force for the change. Both counties are now one or two days different, whereas before the school just matched Edgefield and was different from Aiken entirely.

"In an ideal world, it would be nice if they both had the same calendars," Murph said.Though there won't be any major changes, there will be some alterations.

"We have incorporated half days and one and a half days for our teachers," Murph said. "That is to ensure that teachers are present for report card night ... We are also taking the week of Thanksgiving off. We thought that was a positive move and that Monday and Tuesday is not always used for academics. This way, we are able to just have that time off and use the academic time at other dates and more constructively. It's tough sometimes to go to work on Monday and know that on Tuesday you're going to be off for a while."

Fox Creek will also start and end of the same days as Aiken County. Currently Edgefield County has yet to set their calendar, but Murph points out that the two districts usually match up.

All of the major dates, including graduation and exams are already mapped out on the calendar. To view the calendar for the upcoming school year visit http://www.foxcreekhighschool.org/.
