Quidditch players seek victory at regional tournament
Riverview Park plays host to basketball, baseball, softball, soccer, tennis and disc golf on a regular basis and is on the verge of adding another pursuit this weekend.
The International Quidditch Association, focusing on an activity popularized by the series of "Harry Potter" books and movies, is holding a regional tournament Saturday and Sunday in the park, with teams from schools around the South taking part. The Augusta Sports Council is the co-host.
The guest list includes Tennessee Tech, South Carolina, Florida Atlantic, Florida State, Florida Gulf Coast, Ringling College, South Florida, Southern Mississippi, Winthrop, Miami, Florida, Florida International, College of Charleston and Brevard Community College.
The sport has its collegiate roots in Vermont, at Middlebury College, dating back to 2005. In the Potter books, quidditch involves players who ride flying brooms. The version played by hundreds of American college students, however, uses garden-variety brooms, and players stay relatively close to the ground.
Play is to be from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. each day, and teams are competing for the right to advance to the World Cup Quidditch Championships being held next month in Kissimmee, Fla. Details on the sport are available at www.internationalquidditch.org.
