Man arrested for burglary, second suspect sought
A North Augusta man detained by upstate authorities is accused of scamming a Spartanburg County woman, and a second man is being sought by police.
Tommy Martin Riley, 56, of Dupriest Circle in North Augusta, was charged with second-degree burglary and grand larceny. He was placed in the Spartanburg County detention center.
Riley has been denied bond and is considered a flight risk, according to Lt. Tom Ivey of the Spartanburg County Sheriff's Office.
According to Ivey, Riley and a second suspect posed as flooring salesmen in September 2011 and "conned their way" into a woman's home.
"While one of them blocked the victim's view by showing her samples of linoleum and other types of flooring, the other suspect went into the victim's bedroom and stole between $5,000 and $10,000 of jewelry," Ivey said.
The two men are reportedly known by law enforcement agencies across the country, and Spartanburg investigators sent information on the two suspects to precious metal purchasing companies across the country.
On Saturday, Riley entered a business in Lexington, Ky., that purchases gold and tried to sell gold, authorities said.
"The business was aware of Mr. Riley from the memo they had received from the Spartanburg County Sheriff's Office and was able to stall Mr. Riley long enough for local law enforcement to arrive and take him into custody."
Riley's alleged accomplice, 24-year-old Phillip Michael O'Hara, is wanted on charges of second-degree burglary and grand larceny.
