Predators close out week with strong wins
The Fox Creek High School varsity boys' basketball team kept rolling through Region 4-A with two more wins, which came over Williston-Elko and Wagener-Salley.
The Predators (12-6, 7-0 Region 4-A) dispatched the Blue Devils 66-35 on the road on Jan. 15. The team had four players score in double digits, starting with DJ Curry who had 17. Marques Sumner was right behind him with 13, and Brandyn Quiller and Martrell Allen each had 10 points.
In a showdown with Wagener-Salley at home, the Predators' defense held the visitors to eight points in the second quarter and six points in the third. Fox Creek was able to ride that momentum to a 59-47 win.
"I felt like we were going to come out a bit flat tonight, and we recognized that we needed to come out with some defensive intensity," Fox Creek head coach Andre Baskett said following the game.
Chris Harmon led the team with 16 points. Sumner was once again the second highest scorer, this time putting up 15 points.
When asked about how it felt for his team to have that kind of momentum going into the fourth, Baskett was happy with the result.
"It feels good, and that's what we want to do, we want to get a lead so we can kind of relax," he said. "(Wagener-Salley is) a very talented team. ... We kind of slowed it down in the second half and got to playing our game."
Though the Predators are rolling, the team did suffer some bad news. DeAndre Baskett's knee injury is will cause him to miss the rest of the season.
He is already rehabbing on it and is expected to make a full recovery.
The Fox Creek girls also picked up two wins, though their win over Williston-Elko was much more difficult.
The Predators (6-9, 5-2) got a strong effort from Stephanie Bloedel, who had 24 of the team's points in a 39-38 victory. Dominique Moore, who recently returned from leg surgery, contributed nine points.
Fox Creek was down 12 halfway through the third quarter and battled back.
The team then beat the War Eagles in a game that wasn't nearly as close, 50-26. Bloedel had another strong effort in that matchup, this time for 16 points. Keiana Green had 14 and Moore had six.
"She's just trying to get into her form, she does a tremendous job rebounding, and when she's in she is one of our better inside players," Fox Creek head coach Richard Brady said following the game about Moore. "First half we were all a little sluggish, we missed a bunch of easy shots. Then she hit some inside shots and got us going."
Fox Creek's action this week was to have included a slate at North and a home tilt at Hunter-Kinard-Tyler.
