Fundraiser serves up culinary creations

Saturday evening included some extra-large helpings of dessert and fellowship at the North Augusta Community Center, by way of The RECing Crew’s annual fundraiser, Sweet Celebrations.

Event organizer Pam Stickler confirmed that party-goers had a range of culinary creations available for the choosing, with 15 bakers contributing.

In keeping with tradition, the gathering included silent auctions, with more than 275 gift baskets among the offerings, as well as a live auction for a 1/24-scale, die-cast version of a TaxSlayer car driven by Dale Earnhardt Jr. It eventually went to Bill Easler.

This year’s surprises included a visit by Russell Schneider, in full Elvis regalia. He joined the Crew Chorus for its musical presentation “a really great time,” in Stickler’s assessment.

“That was probably the most fun I’ve had doing Elvis in a long time,” said Schneider, also known as a teacher and as Fox Creek High School’s football coach and athletic director.

“They never have a bad day, and they didn’t know I was coming. To see their faces, when I came in, was priceless. It was hard for me to sing. I just had a blast.”

This year’s culinary creations were courtesy of such businesses and individuals as Antonio’s Italian Eatery, Costco, Cakes by Renee, A Piece of Cake, Kyndra Shed, Louvenia Mathews, Cotton Bug Bakery, Sandra Washington and Tastefully Done.

“A lot of them have been with us since the very, very beginning,” Stickler said, citing Jennifer’s Cakes, BBQ Barn, Publix, French Market Grille, Louise Odom and Very Vera as boosters from the start.

The RECing Crew “was established in 2002 by the families and friends of those with disabilities to offer leisure and recreational opportunities for individuals with disabilities from the CSRA,” as noted on its website.

“These programs enhance the physical, emotional and social growth of those that participate. Currently there are more than 130 individuals, ranging in the ages from 6-78, that participate in one or more of our programs.”
