Downtown developments for Nov. 29

It's Thursday, it's Thanksgiving, and it is also the day President Kennedy was assassinated.

Being that it is Thanksgiving, I thought, why not take the opportunity to express what I am thankful for. First and foremost I am thankful for my two good friends, Pat and Linda, who saw to it that I did not give up trying to get my life back in order. I am more than thankful for my job; I love it and can't wait to go there every day.

If there is such a thing as reincarnation, I hope I remember how much I loved cooking before it is too late and too expensive to go to culinary school.

I am thankful for where I now live. Surrounded by nature and all her surprises, I never know from day to day what critter will show up in my yard or what plant I will discover, but I always know how peaceful and serene it is here. My cats love it, too. They explore, then they bring home goodies to present as presents. Little mole-like critters seem to be the gift of choice.

I am thankful for cable television, so I don't have to watch the garbage put forth by the big three.

I am more than thankful for Food Network, since every time I watch I learn something new - some technique or shortcut or something that will benefit my job or a new recipe that strikes my fancy.

I am thankful that I can pay my bills even though there is precious little leftover each week. If I was suddenly rich I'd be thankful for that, too, and I would be hard-pressed not to take a trip to Vegas just to view a $5,000 hamburger. The practical, been-without-anything-but-Ramen-noodles side of me would never buy one, even if I was millions rich, but to see it would be fun. Can you imagine? Kobe beef, Fois Gras, black truffle, red wine shallot reduction sauce and a touch of black caviar on a homemade potato flour bun? My mouth is watering just thinking about it, then add the $1,000 glass of wine, and you have an outrageously priced meal that may well be worth that kind of cash to someone who has no sense or someone who loves food so much they have to try it no matter the cost.

I am just thankful I have a sweet potato casserole, a fresh pork shoulder and a few other things today, all of which I got on sale and will make numerous meals to come. I hope you all have something you are thankful for today and have had a wonderful Thanksgiving. Oh, and although doubtful, I'd be thankful if the Cowboys win and even more thankful if they terminated Romo.
