Blue Devils blow past Predators
WILLISTON-ELKO 48, FOX CREEK 7
WILLISTON - The Blue Devils wanted to get off to a good start this week, according to their coach. They did just that.
Williston-Elko (5-2, 3-0 Region 4-A) burst out of the gates against Fox Creek (1-5, 0-2). With a little more than a minute off of the clock and on their second offensive play, Jarius Jenkins ripped a 60-yard touchdown against the Predators that set the tone for the rest of the night.
"We stressed to play early and, on that first play, we should come out playing hard and physical from the get go," Williston-Elko head coach Dwayne Garrick said.
Jenkins went on to touch the ball just eight more times in the game, all in the first half, but he also picked up touchdowns of 15 and 4 yards in the second quarter. He didn't see a snap after halftime.
"Jarius is pretty steady, a hard-nosed kid who can get in the end zone," Garrick said. "I don't have to worry at all about Jarius as long as we keep him healthy."
Shaquan Gaffney and David Owens also had rushing touchdowns for the Blue Devils. Dalton Mundy also connected with Antonio Coleman on a long touchdown.
The Blue Devils dominated the Predators, holding them to negative yards rushing in the first half.
"We were tackling better and getting to the ball tonight," Garrick said. "We have executed in practice and executed our gameplan tonight. I'm pleased with how the defense did."
Fox Creek was finally able to get their legs under them in the third quarter, but by then, Williston-Elko had made mass substitutions.
"When you are playing against a power football team, it gets discouraging," Fox Creek head coach Russ Schneider said. "Our kids didn't lay down; they kept fighting to the end."
The toughness for the Predators was personified by Fox Creek quarterback Trey Mock. After Deondre Baskett was knocked out with a knee injury early on, Mock was asked to lead the offense. He responded by getting a 40-yard touchdown late in the game on a physical run, and though the outcome was well-decided, it was the first time in school history that Fox Creek scored against Williston-Elko.
"He showed how tough of a kid he is tonight," Schneider said. "Deondre hurt his knee, and we didn't want to take any chances. We did manage to get every kid in tonight."
The scariest moment in the game occurred in the third quarter when Fox Creek's Trey Heflen was tackled in the backfield for a loss on a play that jerked his neck around. Despite being on the field in the same position for 15 minutes, Schneider said that he seemed to be fine.
"Trey was moving and talking to us as he was getting loaded up," Schneider said. "He was cracking jokes and in good spirits. It looked worse than it was, I think. The medics just wanted to take every precaution with it being the neck and back."
