Merriwether raises funds for Relay For Life

Relay For Life is a special time to give tribute to loved ones, whether family or friends, that have battled cancer in some way.

Over the past five years, Merriwether Elementary has participated in this annual event by fundraising and making donations to the American Cancer Society.

For the 2012-2013 school year, Merriwether hosted a number of “competitions” to raise money in support of the cause. In the fall, students participated in a “House Divided” team war. They donated money toward their favorite college football team, forcing the principal and a teacher to wear the winners’ colors. A “Penny War” against each grade level during the week before the Relay raised more than $1,000. The second grade level took first place with $347.99.

The week culminated with teachers walking the track during the Relay For Life Walk at Strom Thurmond High School on Saturday, April 27.

Teachers dressed up and cheered each other on while creating an atmosphere of joy and encouragement.

Jennifer Forrest, team leader for Merriwether Elementary, said, “Several of our own staff have been affected, including me, which makes this cause more personal and motivating.”

Agreeing, Barbara White added, “On behalf of those touched by cancer, Thank you.’”

Overall, thanks to teachers, parents and students, Merriwether Elementary was able to give the American Cancer Society a total of $7,284.12.
