N.A. native to perform first organ solo at First Baptist Church of Augusta
Organist John Coble, known to some as a 1984 graduate of North Augusta High School, is to present a recital - his first solo concert - Tuesday at First Baptist Church of Augusta. The concert will start at 7:30 p.m.
Coble's education included years at Hammond Hill Elementary and Paul Knox Middle. He grew up as a member of Grace United Methodist Church, where the music director was Wayne Lord, also known as Paul Knox's music director at the time. Lord became Coble's piano teacher, and Coble went on to study at Augusta College, graduating in organ performance.
The son of Joyce Coble and the late Russ Coble, John Coble currently is the organist and music director at Augsburg Lutheran Church, in Winston-Salem, N.C., and recently accepted a similar position at First Presbyterian Church of Athens, Ga.
His background includes a master's degree in organ performance from Florida State University and a doctorate in organ and church music from Indiana University, as well as memberships in the American Guild of Organists, the Royal School of Church Music, the Association of Anglican Musicians, the Association of Lutheran Church Musicians and the Presbyterian Association of Musicians.
Lord noted that Coble, in 2009, founded "Horns for Haiti, a project to raise funds and collect instruments, music and other supplies for the St. Francis Episcopal Church and school on the island of La Gonave, Haiti."
He added, "In addition to presenting benefit recitals for Horns for Haiti, he has also performed and conducted concerts benefiting Buckhead Christian Ministries in Atlanta, and for the Gulf Coast following Hurricane Katrina."
