Chaplain's Corner for Jan. 31: Healing
My chaplaincy opportunities at Walter Reed introduced me to the healing qualities of art therapy. I learned that some military members with life-limiting illnesses could express painful feelings through drawing or painting that they could not articulate otherwise. The endeavor provided a non-threatening way of communicating deep emotions. Energy spent on the art project proved therapeutic, and it sometimes led them to vocally share their deepest hopes and fears. This experience taught me much about how we respond differently to life's challenges and how God uses many avenues to promote healing. "He heals the brokenhearted, and binds up their wounds" (Psalm 147:3).
