LETTER: Fletcher Dickert wants to improve North Augusta
Dickert wants to improve North Augusta
Recently, I had lunch at The River Golf Club with Fletcher Dickert, candidate for North Augusta City Council. I offer my impressions of Fletcher, hoping that savvy readers will support Dickert's election effort as I intend to do.
My first impression of Fletcher was that he was blessed with an excellent first name. But, I digress.
Fletcher is a man devoted to his family and his church. He spoke passionately about his desire to improve the quality of life for his family and his fellow citizens. He believes our City's recreation and public safety departments should continue to receive generous funding as our community's positive reputation has been built largely on the correct perception that we are a safe community with great recreational programs.
Fletcher is informed. For the past year, he has attended City Council meetings and study sessions in order to understand the challenges and opportunities we face as a community. His motivations are noble. Fletcher has no axe to grind, and he is not seeking a position on Council to support policies that enhance his career or to steer tax dollars toward a pet project.
Fletcher's background in construction at Allen+Batchelor Construction Company has prepared him well to assist Council and the Planning Commission in creating a mass grading ordinance to ensure that future development in North Augusta is consistent with the high standards that we have enjoyed for generations - standards Fletcher knows should not be compromised.
Finally, I was most impressed when Fletcher talked about his vision for downtown North Augusta. He supports development of the riverfront, but he knows that the heart of our community lies in our downtown. I completely agree with Fletcher on this point. Our downtown has been neglected for too long, and it is time our City government forms a vision for downtown that is at least as attractive as the vision they have formed for the riverfront.
Fletcher is the right man for the job. Please join me in voting for Fletcher Dickert in the Republican primary on Feb. 12.
