Jackets gear up for last game before region play
The last week of 2012 was mostly fruitful for North Augusta High School in terms of boys' basketball. The Yellow Jackets went 3-1 in the Lake Marion Invitational Tournament, gearing up for Region 5-AAAA action.
The Jackets (9-3) are scheduled to have their last non-region game of the regular season Saturday at home against Greenbrier, a squad that they defeated, 65-39, on Dec. 21, Coach Al Young's squad, in its Orangeburg County action, opened up play Dec. 26 by demolishing Berkeley, 80-33. Steve Copeland's 13 points led the winners, and teammate Victor Johnson added 12.
The Jackets were thumped one day later by Westside (of Augusta), to the tune of 64-47. Tavarez Hall and Copeland led North Augusta's scorers, racking up 14 and 10 points, respectively.
Malik Dunbar led North Augusta the next day, scoring 16 points in a 76-53 romp over Buford (Ga.). Teammates Christian Davis and Robert Morgan each added 11.
The finale was an 87-55 waltz against Estill on Saturday. The Jackets' leading scorer was T.J. Sheppard with 15 points. Following were teammates Kenny Finley with 14 and Copeland and Chandler Harrison, each with 12.
Consistent play is a goal for the Jackets, Young said.
"We got the chance to play all of our kids, and I got the chance to look at some things and look at some people, so it was good for us."
He described the squad as relatively healthy going into the Greenbrier game.
Saturday's action is to begin at 6 p.m., with the boys' game following the girls'. North Augusta's girls (6-1) faced Greenbrier on the road Dec. 21 and won 52-41.
North Augusta's region play is to begin Tuesday on the road against Lexington.
